Menopause/Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the period of life in which women are transitioning from the reproductive years to menopause.  A woman is considered postmenopausal after 12 months with no menstrual period.

Associated symptoms include:

  • hot flashes

  • heart palpitations

  • night sweats

  • insomnia

  • anxiety/irritability

  • depression

  • physical and mental exhaustion

  • joint and muscle discomfort

  • worsening PMS symptoms (in the perimenopause period)

  • irregular menstrual cycles and sometimes heavy bleeding (in the perimenopause period)

  • vaginal dryness

During perimenopause, estrogen levels fluctuate and there is loss of other hormones, resulting in many symptoms that can significantly alter a woman’s mood, functioning, and well-being. Menopausal symptoms are likely the most common reason that women seek hormone therapy.
